Have we forgotten how to connect to shared values?
This month I had the lovely experience of running a media training session with the Australia Awards fellows for Melbourne Climate Futures – policy makers from across the Pacific and the Bahamas doing amazing things across health, environment, worker safety, food security and more.
Emma Sharp joined me for the training, sharing her experiences managing one of Australia’s most unique production studios (Humdinger) blending corporate, Government and non-profit work with some of Australia’s most talented comedians and creatives.
While Zayne D’Crus was kind enough to sit down with me for an interview especially recorded for the Australia Awards fellows sharing his experiences as a storyteller and advocate.
One piece of Zayne’s advice really struck a chord with me:
My advice for people translating complex policy is to start with values. So, when you’re speaking to your audience, you find the thing that everybody values and then build your message from there.
Too often we get caught up in the data, the detail, the policy, the campaign or the message and forget – why are we doing this?
What are we using this data to achieve? Who is this campaign meant to help? What action or reaction are we trying to encourage with this message?
It all counts for nothing if you can’t tap into the shared values you have with your audience.
You’re constantly helping people to be effective translators. A translator is not just someone who repeats a message in another language. The translator is someone who thinks about how to frame that to somebody who looks at the world in a slightly different way.
Tapping into shared values doesn’t mean having the same message for everyone however.
Zayne’s point about translation is a powerful one. Your policy, research or data needs to be translated and interpreted for each audience.
Whether your audience is a Government Minister changing a law or a community member on the ground fighting for their community – they are human beings guided by their values. It’s up to you to interrogate your shared values and then connect your policy, data and research through that lens.
If we want evidence-based policy and action on society’s most pressing issues we must make the effort to translate policy and teach others to be effective translators.
Hi, I’m JB – I’ve been working as a broadcaster, content maker and comms advisor for nearly 20 years. Aus Comms Guide is my newsletter to share comms tips for good people and good causes. Sign up on email at auscommsguide.com – I also do communications consulting for proud nerds and good causes – jbau.com.au

This month I’ve been doing Leadership Victoria‘s Igniting Leadership program led by Dana Eisenstein and I learned so much across the 5 day course. A few highlights:
Fierce Conversations by Susan Scott is a book I read many years ago, but the course reminded me to pick it up again – if you struggle with conflict or how to handle high emotion environments, this book is a lifesaver: https://fierceinc.com/fierce-conversations/
Your Leadership Edge by Ed O’Malley & Amanda Cebula is a practical (and corporate leadership wank free) set of tools and strategies for being a more effective leader. It focuses on leadership as an action you choose, rather than a hierarchical ladder to climb. The tools have already helped me more than once since the course finished, so I highly recommend having a read: https://www.amazon.com.au/Your-Leadership-Edge-Strategies-Everyone/dp/1885167687
If you want to be a leader in comms – these books are well worth your time.
Our group:

The course involves a lot of vulnerability – you need to be willing to be challenge and challenge others (with kindness!). It really feels like we hit the jackpot with this group – an incredibly safe space to explore our leadership challenges and push ourselves. I want to give a huge thanks to everyone in the group for their words on encouragement, great advice and openness.

Gorgeous First Nations art!
And a quick shout out to Matthew E., Fatima Everitt and Dreamtime Art Creative Consultancy for their piece ‘Resonance’:

It’s a piece I commissioned with my colleagues at Community Broadcasting Foundation as part of our Reconciliation Action Plan and it’s well worth reading the story behind it from Matt: https://dreamtimeart.com.au/resonance/
